If anyone's interested, I've found the perfect enclosure for the MIDI2600 kit (external version):

It fits very snugly indeed once the holes for the joystick connectors and MIDI input are cut. There isn't a millimeter to spare width-ways. This will reduce wear and tear when the plugs are removed, as the sockets will not wiggle around.

I bought the enclosure in my local branch of Maplin. It cost about £3.50.
