install darwine, i used the version from:
http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/

the install steem somewhere sensible. make sure you start the app from winehelper using the 'nodd' switch

setting x11 to 'thousands of colours' will help with speed

ballz, why do i have to be the one to ask dumb questions!!! ok
so i can't seem to get steem going on my mac, everything loads great, wine helper gets me all the way to where I am choosing hd file and it almost loads when a error notice pops up and tells me that I should check the log window for the error.
and in the log it says.

"fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps OpenGL implementation supports 16 vertex samplers and 16 total samplers
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Expected vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers
fixme:file:MoveFileWithProgressW MOVEFILE_WRITE_THROUGH unimplemented
fixme:ddraw:DllCanUnloadNow (void): stub"

which unfortunately, I do not understand.
so yep, here I am prolly asking another dumb question.
any help would be great thanks.
I read the steem beginners guide, but it is talking about windows, so there were some things that i would not do.

Yes! Thank you little naps! I was just about to ask the same question but was putting it off big_smile Did you also try googling 'nodd switch' only to find a Beaverton, CO local foods site and a wikipedia page about a sub-par rock band?

you need to spawn steem directly from the darwine helper application. this will allow you to pass arguments to the application, including the vital 'nodd' parameter.

did you do this?

so i am using the darwine helper application, I open "steem.exe" (from the steem v3_2 folder) from the application window. and it pops up an error telling me that "Steem.exe has exited wit an error, have a look at the Log window" and then the log window tells me this.
that is the exact process that i took

fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps OpenGL implementation supports 16 vertex samplers and 16 total samplers
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Expected vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers
fixme:file:MoveFileWithProgressW MOVEFILE_WRITE_THROUGH unimplemented
fixme:ddraw:DllCanUnloadNow (void): stub

I can also say that I am not sure what exactly is the "nodd" parameter.

It runs! I'm still getting a direct sound initialization failure on every startup but I think I can figure that one out... hopefully. Thanks gwem - for the help and the amazing software : )

So is this now the best solution for osx users?

Is midi working?

this is currently the best solution for osx users in terms of using YM chiptrackers

midi sucks on steem with windows anyway... i have no plans currently to use it with darwine on osx

of course we all want the 'insert' key, which is important for trackers and max don't have it.

use the steem shortcut editor to make a new shortcut (its the lightning icon) - assign it to anything

then you can go in and edit the file it creates, which can be found without too much imagination in the shortcuts folder of your steem installation smile

you'll have something like this:

Shortcut5_Action=0
Shortcut5_ID1=47
Shortcut5_ID2=65535
Shortcut5_ID3=65535
Shortcut5_Key=45 ***************
Shortcut5_Char=0
Shortcut5_MacroFile=

modify the line i've highlighted with stars, it should read 45 for the insert key.

strange. couldn't make it work on wine (same problem as little naps), but it worked really fine on crossover.

ok, now the million dollar question: how the hell do I stop emulation on steem, since the mac keyboard doesn't have pause/break key?
