  • Bit_Rat : CNLohr: Obviously I'm not mr. Keenes, but this song's been in my busking/open mic repertoire for awhile now-- except the breakdown/solo 2/3 of the way in, it's just Amaj, C#, Dmaj, Emaj. That's how I play it, anyway (I use a variant of that for the breakdown part since I just play it acoustic).

  • L-tron : you're pretty much my favorite animal
    on October 22nd 2009, 08:43 AM
  • Random : J. Arthur: Well, I think they (the vocals) sound a bit too cold, flat and mid-range. Perhaps an EQ-curve where you boost some below-mid frequencies (wide Q, 2-3,5 dB+), with a small drop just after the boost (about -2-3 dB) could work? (But that's impossible to know for sure, without trying). It also sounds as if there's a high-pass filter cutting in to the fundamental frequency of the voice. I would set the high-pass just to remove any mic/room hum. The thing is, I think the vocals should be a tiny bit louder, but with the current cold sound of them, it would be sharp to the ear I imagine. That might be because of the slight distortion too... If you really like the slightly distorted sound, perhaps you should try makign a copy of the vocal channels, distort only that copy, and mix it in with a non-distorted version... Experiment! Anyway, I think it could be greatly improved with just EQ and volume settings. A better mic – and solve the issues on recording stage – is ofcourse optimal, but I don't think it's absolutely necessary. Props for a great song again, I hope my comment could be of some help :/

  • glomag : fantastic melody and harmonies! Really great arrangement too.
    on October 21st 2009, 10:16 PM
  • Reverend Protocol : Indeed, it did remind me of TMBG. I think the comments regarding the vocal mix should be taken with a grain of subjective salt. Personally I believe it sounds great mixed the way it is. How you want it mixed really depends on what you want the focus of the song to be. As it is now, the vocals stand out just enough to feel like the focus of the song, to me, and I like that.

    on October 21st 2009, 03:46 PM
  • J. Arthur Keenes : any specific criticisms Random or Mr. Spastic? like do you think its EQ'd too high, too distorted, too quiet or something like that, or do you just find it generally cruddy sounding?
    on October 21st 2009, 03:31 PM
  • mr.spastic : good composition. breakdown was unexpected which is ideal. i hate to reiterate what random had said but my only problem is the vocal mix, the guitars are subtle enough to make the rest of the track stand out. drum programming done well.
    on October 21st 2009, 03:26 PM
  • J. Arthur Keenes : Thanks for the kind words everyone, Random: Ah, I've been waiting for someone to mention something to that effect, I most definitely could use a better mic. I'm pretty content with the sound of it, and no one I asked seemed to have any criticisms about the vocal sound, but I was back and forth about it during the mixing, and it's a bit of a pain to mix vocals with GB, especially with an amateurish set-up like my own.
    on October 21st 2009, 01:42 PM
  • Random : Great work! The only thing I can criticise is the recording quality/mixing of the vocals. I like your singing, it's not that, but it wouldn't hurt if you either had a more high quality mic, recorded it in another room, EQ it better – or a combination of the three, I can't tell (of course). Anyway, really great song! Looking forward to see you perform on this year's Blip Festival!

  • epichunt : Absolutely brilliant! Sounds like an actual song you'd hear on the radio or wherever rather than a small tune, probably due to the professional, well written and sung lyrics. absolutely love this tune, its dope, sick, great, fantastic - I won't go on with compliments cos i'd sit here all night.
